Personal Support Workers (PSWs)

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Assist with daily living activities including delivering meals to the patients, turning and ambulating, providing extra nourishment between meals and water
  • Help patient with personal hygiene, help with baths and showers
  • Provide adjunct care for the patient including ice packs, nonsterile dressing, and therapeutic baths
  • Provide cognitive, social, and/or emotional support to the client
  • Assist other staff as needed
  • Adhere to professional standards, follow policies and procedures and abide by state requirements
  • Group activities, workshops, and presentations
  • Assisting with ambulation, positioning, and transferring using mechanical lifts such as the Hoyer lift
  • Performing sitter duty or patient watch for confused patients
  • Following the care plan, observing and reporting any substantial findings and/or changes in clients’ behavior to the healthcare care

Qualifications:

Diploma or Certification from a PSW care recognized by the Ministry of Advanced Education

Job Requirements:

  • Minimum 1 year of experience
  • Basic computer skills
  • Technical Skills: Experience working with acutely/chronically ill and palliative patients
  • Interacting with patients and their families
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Willingness to travel within a designated area
  • Valid driver’s license and vehicle insurance
  • Full immunization
  • Overall competency in working under pressure
  • Experience in providing general care and support
  • Knowledge of home care services
